How to find your perfect scent – Bjöerk's scent guide

Choosing perfume online can feel difficult – how do you know what something smells like through a screen? This guide will help you every step of the way: from understanding scent notes to testing correctly and making your scent last longer.

Understand the scent notes: top, heart, and base

A perfume is like a story in three chapters. Top notes are what you smell first – often fresh, fruity, or citrusy – and they last for 15–30 minutes. Heart notes are the core of the fragrance that emerge after a while and linger for several hours, often flowers, spices, or gourmand tones. Base notes are the foundation – vanilla, musk, wood, amber – that hide beneath and stay on the skin the longest, sometimes until the next day.

That's why you should never judge a scent by the first spray. Give it at least an hour on your skin – it's the heart and base you'll be living with.

Why our scents last long: 20% perfume oil

The concentration of perfume oil determines how strong and long-lasting a scent is. A common Eau de Toilette often contains 5–12% perfume oil. All Bjöerk scents are Eau de Parfum with 20% perfume oil – in the higher range of the EdP spectrum – which provides both a richer scent profile and longer lasting power on the skin.

Test smart: start with a tester

Our 3 ml testers contain exactly the same Eau de Parfum as the full-size bottle. Here's how to get the most out of your tester:

Spray on clean skin (wrist or elbow crease) – not on clothes, as the scent develops differently on fabric. Don't rub your wrists together; it breaks down the top notes. Let the scent live on your skin for a full day and note how it feels in the morning, midday, and evening. Test a maximum of two scents at a time, one per wrist – more will be difficult to distinguish. A 3 ml tester lasts for many wear days, so you'll really get to know the scent before you choose.

Choose scent by occasion and season

Heat intensifies scents – in summer, everything becomes more intense, so lighter fruity and fresh scents come into their own. Cold dampens – in autumn and winter, warm, sweet, and spicy scents (vanilla, oud, amber, gourmand) get room to bloom. For everyday wear and the office, softer scents that stay close to the skin are suitable, while evening and parties are the right time for scents with greater projection.

Make the scent last longer

Spray on moisturized skin – an unscented lotion first makes a big difference, as dry skin releases scent faster. Aim for pulse points: wrists, neck, behind the ears, elbow creases. A spray in your hair or on a scarf creates a scent trail that lasts all day. Store the bottle in a dark and cool place – not in the bathroom, where heat and humidity break down the scent over time.

What does "inspired by" mean?

Our scents in Bjöerk Essentials and Bjöerk Atelier Privé are inspired by the world's most beloved perfumes – and we always openly state exactly which ones. You get a fragrance experience in the same spirit as the original, at a fraction of the price, without having to guess what's in the bottle. That's our take on honest perfume.
